Overall, we were quite pleased with our experience with Bharat. We were disappointed, however, with the company for whom he works. Since we have lived in various 3rd world countries, we are well aware of the fact that foreigners are frequently taken advantage of and deceived by the locals, especially if you don’t speak the language. If they know it is your first time in India, watch out: they will take advantage of the fact that you are unfamiliar with the going rates. Because of the fact that it wasn’t our first time in India, we knew that the company had over-charged us. Being on a tight budget, we requested the “budget package.” While our hotel in Jaipur was very nice, the ones the company booked for us in both Agra and Delhi were absolute dumps. When we arrived in Agra, Bharat introduced us to our “complimentary guide” who was going to show us around the Taj Mahal. Very informative, but not really complimentary. During the tour he informed us that the cost would be $20 per person. I challenged him on this because I knew for a fact that the entrance ticket was $15. He then claimed that the additional $5 was for the airport-type-disposable shoe covers (which he recommended to avoid having to leave our shoes with the masses), for the tuc-tuc ride (only a few blocks) and a tip for himself (since when were tips obligatory??). The tuc-tuc ride was probably no more than 50 RP, and the shoe coverings were probably either free or less than 50 RP, so I knew we were being ripped off. The company never told us that we would be asked to provide a tip for another guide other than Bharat. This annoyed us. It is very easy for a foreigner, especially those who have never traveled much in the 3rd world, to be deceived in India, so be careful. People seem very nice, but often there is an ulterior motive. I know it sounds cynical, but it is reality. There were other minor instances when I know we were being “taken” but that we chose not to challenge. Although I really hate to be taken advantage of, sometimes it just isn’t worth the hassle. On a positive note, Bharat was an amazing driver, maneuvering in and out of the chaotic traffic with the skill of an action movie driver. In spite of his risky moves, we never felt unsafe or nervous. He seemed to have our safety in mind at all times. He refused to drink any alcohol while on the job, in spite of the fact that we offered him a beer at one point during dinner. His kind personality made the five-day trip a pleasant one.
